Chapter Eleven
Dinner that evening was a boisterous affair. Elizabeth's two younger children were delightful. Thirteen year old Gabriel was his father in miniature, right down to the blond hair. Hope looked a great deal like Elizabeth in coloring, but she had her father's features.
"Hope, do not throw another pea at your brother!" Elizabeth hissed at her youngest. "I don't know why you have to turn every spoon you touch into a catapult."
"But, Mama! He started it! He pulled my friend's braid after school today." Hope protested. "I have to get him back somehow!"
"Did not!" Gabriel protested. He glared at Hope, obviously embarrassed by what she'd just said.
Rose sighed dramatically. "Oh, you know you did, Gabe. Just because you think Jane is pretty doesn't mean you should be mean to her all the time."
Elizabeth looked at Gabriel. "Did you pull Jane's braid?"
Gabriel looked like he was about to protest for a moment, but he lowered his head. "Yes, ma'am."
Elizabeth looked at Lillian. "Children are both a blessing and a burden!" She shook her head. "How I'll survive raising all three of them properly, I'll never know!"
Lillian laughed softly. "I think they're more of a blessing to you!"
Rose shook her head. "Not those two. I'm the good one! I just help out here and read. I never get into trouble."
Hope leaned forward. "That's because Father doesn't know about the boys who fight to carry your books home from school. If he knew about them, he'd be very unhappy."
Adam's head snapped to the side. "Rose? Do you have something to tell me?"
Rose turned pink. "It's not like any of them are courting me. They just carry my books."
"We'll talk about this more later." Adam turned back to Benedict. "Children are a blessing, but don't have daughters. It scares me to think about what it's going to be like when she's of age because she's had boys chasing her since she was ten."
"You should have had boys first!" Benedict said with a grin.
"You have an older sister, don't you?"
Benedict nodded. "Scrawny Bonnie. I was fortunate that my sisters who attracted men like flies to honey were the two youngest, with three older brothers to watch out for them."
Adam shook his head. "You really call your sister Scrawny Bonnie? That's terrible!"
"We all have nicknames we use for each other. There's Scrawny Bonnie, Handsome Hank, Perfect Percy, Gorgeous Gwen, and Lovely Libby."
"And what was your nickname?" Adam asked.
"Oh, that one isn't important," Benedict said, realizing just then he shouldn't have brought up the nicknames. He didn't want his friend to realize what his siblings thought of him.
Lillian grinned. "You left out my favorite. Bossy Benedict." Lillian wasn't about to let him get away with not telling his own name.
Adam laughed. "Bossy Benedict, are you?"
"He really is! I've never met a bossier man in my life!" Lillian couldn't help but say it, even though she knew it would annoy her husband. She was still a bit angry with him for earlier.
Benedict glared at Lillian. "If you would just obey my every command like the good book says, I wouldn't have to get bossy with you.
